In a world that often overlooks the potential of young people with developmental disabilities, Camptown’s Trailblazers program works with schools and community organizations across Central Indiana to change the narrative around what these young people are capable of accomplishing. During Trailblazers, limitations are turned into launching pads for personal growth as students discover their strengths and conquer their uncertainties while learning what the outdoors has in store for them.
Imagine a young person who has never hiked, pitched a tent, or cooked over an open fire. Now picture that same person confidently navigating the wilderness, solving challenges, and discovering strengths they never knew they possessed. This is the magic of Trailblazers.
What makes Trailblazers truly unique is its collaborative approach with local schools. Camptown doesn’t just create a program – we design an experience that matches what students need. Teachers and Camptown staff work hand in hand to ensure every student maximizes their adventure.
Students with developmental disabilities spend significant classroom time learning about personal responsibility and practical skills. The Trailblazers program provides a crucial bridge, allowing them to apply classroom learning to real-world experiences. Before their overnight camping adventure, students receive multiple days of training to build confidence and develop necessary skills on-site at their schools. Participants learn practical camping skills like building a campfire, preparing food, and pitching a tent.
These activities are more than just outdoor skills – they’re opportunities to practice critical soft skills learned in the classroom. Teamwork, self-sufficiency, and problem-solving come to life in ways students might never experience otherwise.
For students like Lionel and Matty, as pictured here on their overnight camping trip with Camptown’s Trailblazers program, there are few community resources or extracurricular activities. Therefore the Trailblazers program is nothing short of life-changing. “Most of these young adults would not be doing anything if not for this program,” notes Don, one of our program leaders.
When asked about the program, Lionel and Matty gave their reflections. “I can overcome obstacles,” Matty said. For Matty, one of his major personal hurdles is problem solving. While on a Trailblazers program, he uses his confidence to solve conflicts with a smile. Lionel chimed in to add, “I learned how to sleep in a tent.” Something like tent sleeping is a huge accomplishment for young people like Lionel, who has sensory sensitivity and a difficult time adapting to new environments.
Parents frequently share that their children look forward to these programs all year long. Program partners are equally enthusiastic. Lauri, a leader from one of our partner schools, was quick to share her thoughts: “Such a great experience!! Saw growth and joy in ALL the kids. An experience they would likely NOT have with their families.” Another mentor added, “Many have never been hiking, let alone camping overnight. It is a wonderful experience! The teachers see the students in new ways, too!”
