For more than 35 years, Camptown has called a lot of places home. When we take a minute to stop and reflect, we find ourselves amazed at just how far we’ve come: from our beginnings in Tom Lehman’s garage, to our multiple homes across Indianapolis, and now, finally, our dream destination.
After many months of keeping it secret, we’re excited to share that Camptown has moved to a 26-acre property at 1010 W. 64th Street in Indianapolis. We’re calling it “Base Camp,” and we couldn’t be more excited about what it means for our future.
Our Vision for Our New Home
If you’ve ever been camping or hiking, you know a base camp is where adventures begin. It’s the place you come back to, prepare from, rest at, and learn. That’s exactly what we hope this property becomes for the youth we serve across Central Indiana — a place where kids feel safe, connected, encouraged, and ready to explore the world around them.
Naturally, Base Camp will become the new home for many of Camptown’s programs, including Natural Wonders Day Camp and Wilderness Adventure Academy.
With a lake, trails, and dedicated program buildings, our new home gives us the perfect environment for kids to learn, explore, and experience the outdoors in hands-on ways. Don’t worry though, we’ll still be spending plenty of time in the State and National Parks that have always been an important part of the Camptown experience.
Looking Ahead
Since 1991, Camptown has served more than 60,000 young people, and over the next 10 years we hope to reach another 70,000 students. By giving us more space, more opportunities, and more ways to create meaningful experiences for every camper who comes through our programs, we believe Base Camp will make our goals a reality.
Needless to say, this move marks an exciting season of growth for Camptown. We look forward to sharing our vision for the property with you in the near future! New things are happening all the time, and we can’t wait to share more of what we’ve been working on at Base Camp.
